Nurbs surface reconstruction from triangle mesh or point cloud data

Surface reconstruction from point cloud data is a reverse engineering process required for example in post production analysis. If you need to bring your scanned model back to your CAD editor then our new Autoshaper software can help you in converting your point cloud data into a free form solid shape. That new shape generated from triangle mesh or point cloud data can be exported for further editing to any file format supporting nurbs surfaces, either STEP, IGES or Rhino 3DM. In the next Autoshaper updates we will add also support for spatial SAT file format.

Autoconverter software is intended to work with triangular mesh data, for example stored in STL (Stereolithography) or OBJ (Alias Wavefront) mesh file formats, while Autoshaper software works on nurbs shapes that precisely describe model geometry fully supported by STEP or IGES file formats. Therefore when reconstructing surface from point cloud data Autoconverter generates just a triangle mesh, which can consist of million of triangles, but Autoshaper builds a smooth solid shape which can be successfully edited in your favorite CAD environment.

The reconstruction process is fully automatic, the only parameter that is left to the end user is a reconstruction quality, which allows to lower the number of generated nurbs patches and by this also the file size when exporting the new model to a file. While the initial setting may not be sufficient in all the cases, and some adjustment will need to be done, the reconstruction process is efficient enough that you can execute it multiple times for different quality settings, which actually is a good practice for every reverse engineering or surface reconstruction user.
